Bring your bike and your friends for a tour of Portland’s levee system! The Multnomah County Drainage District, Verde, Andando en Bicicletas y Caminando (ABC), and the Columbia Slough Watershed Council will lead this 17-mile bike trip on easy terrain along the lower Columbia Slough in N/NE Portland.Riders will learn about the functionality and history of Portland’s levee system which protects people and properties from flooding, as well as the work that’s being done to ensure that the levee system meets modern standards for public safety. Participants will also learn about the Vanport Flood of 1948 and discuss the lasting impacts on communities then and today.Representatives from Levee Ready Columbia, a collaboration of government, business, and neighborhood organizations working together to evaluate the condition of our local levee network and to ensure valuable regional resources are protected in the future, will also share information. Great Annual Slough Clean Up

Join the Columbia Slough Watershed Council, Multnomah County Drainage District, and Levee Ready Columbia for the 12th annual trash-hauling extravaganza! Borrow a boat, bring your own, or sort out trash on land. With your help, the Slough gets cleaner each year! Clearing garbage and debris from the Slough helps to keep water moving through our conveyance systems. This helps to reduce flood-risk for critical habitat, adjacent communities, and visitors. Interested participants will have the opportunity to tour a section of our 27-mile levee system that helps protect people, property and the environment from flooding along the Lower Columbia River. Boats, gloves, tools, and Slough mud provided. Columbia Slough Regatta

You're invited to join the Columbia Slough Watershed Council, Multnomah County Drainage District, and Levee Ready Columbia for the 24th Annual Regatta, a unique on the water paddle festival! The event features complimentary 45-minute canoe and kayak rentals (all equipment provided) for registered attendees. Before and after paddling, participants can visit with local environmental and water-based organizations, enjoy hands-on activities and live music. This year, the event will feature walking tours of the levee system, a flood simulation model, and a storytelling booth sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to collect stories about attendees’ experiences with flooding and connection to the watershed and areas protected by our flood management systems. Event activities will include: - A treasure hunt - Canoe rides - Face painting - Hands-on science activities - Ice cream aquifers and much more! FREE!  No registration required. All activities (including 15-minute canoe rides) are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. More about Portland’s Groundwater: Groundwater from the Columbia South Shore is a secondary source of drinking water for Portland and is a critical component of the region’s drinking water system. Groundwater is used to help meet higher summer water demands and to provide water during emergencies or when Portland’s primary drinking water source, the Bull Run watershed, is not available. This event is a part of the outreach efforts of the Portland Water Bureau’s Groundwater Protection Program. The Cities of Portland, Gresham and Fairview have implemented this program to protect the Columbia South Shore Well Field – a drinking water source for over 900,000 Oregonians.
